Heart rate
Hi guys,
Just wanted to pick a few brains about heart rates for a friend of mine.
She recently has starting training for triathlons but has always been involved with some form of exercise since 13. But since training triathlon specific for the last two months she has been using a heart rate monitor. She has told me that she is feeling really fit and in the best shape of her life since training regularly but her hear rate is very high after a standard running session.
After an hour training session running, her hear rate was an average of 170 beats per minute. She is 23 and says her resting heart round is around 65 but has always said she has a quick pulse but not feeling particularly tired the day after sessions any more than you would feel.
But she feels that it’s not the hear rate as when cycling it’s around the right mark of 130-14o BPM.
Could you please let me know your thoughts and if there is any science behind this.

Has your friend ever done a maximum HR test? Whilst there are lots of formulas for calculating MHR (220 - age etc) everyone is different and I strongly feel that you need to establish your own targets. I am one of those people who's HR bears little resemblance to the usual rules (resting HR of 49bpm, max HR 190bpm).
Also remembr that your HR when cycling will normally be around 10bpm lower than when running and if you want to get really accurate HR training zones your friend will also need to perform a max HR test when cycling.
There is a good article on HR zones & using an HRM on Tri247.com at the moment; "Running Naked" by Mike Trees.
Hope this helps
Sarah
thanks, I will check it and let you know how we get on!
