Ironman Reading
Hi
Following last night's Ironman evening where some recommended reading was given, I thought I'd add in a book that some of you might like:
"Becoming an Ironman - First Encounters with the Ultimate Endurance Event" - Kara Douglass Thom - ISBN 1-891369-31-8 (I got my copy from Amazon)
It's not a coaching or technical guide, but contains a collection of athletes' stories about their first IM-distance race. You will have heard of some of them, e.g. Joanna Zeiger, Karen Smyers, Scott Tinley (not forgetting Troy Jacobson for the Spinervals users out there!) But there are plenty of stories from other people of all ages and abilities.
Although it is aimed towards those looking to do their first IM-distance, I think it can bring a lot to those who have already done the distance.
Happy reading!
Steph
Damn, thought this was a thread about an Ironman event being held in Reading - would have been easy to get to and everything....
I am sure Going Long by Gordo Byrn and Joe Friel has already been recommended....
I can say from experience that all the fancy training plans in the world wont help unless you actually get out the door and put the miles in - H.T.F.U. and J.F.T.....
Matt
D'oh! Can't believe I didn't read IM Reading as IM Reading... hope no one tried booking a place at that fictional race!
Thought I'd add in a couple more resources that I find useful: the website www.xtri.com, and the Ironman Talk podcost (www.ironmantalk.com). Are there any other John and Bevan fans out there?
Cheers,
Steph
Not sure if it was mentioned, but The Triathlete's Training Bible, also by Joe Friel, is a great resource, especially if an IM is also your first triathlon.
One thing about this book and Going Long though, is don't be put off by phrases like:
'Some people scrape by on barely 14 hours each week.'
Friel and Gordo are not like normal people and have different standards. I can tell you for a fact that some people scrape through on a lot less training than that!
"....scraping through on a lot less training..."
who are you talking about?
no, the 'hat' doesn't fit...!
